Mount Buangor State Park, on Eastern Maar Country in central west Victoria has deep, lush forests, rugged slopes and mountain peaks. It’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in nature and discover somewhere new.

Mount Buangor State Park is located on the lower reaches of the Great Dividing Range, 175km north-west of Melbourne and 60km west of Ballarat. A 15km network of walking tracks, many extending into the adjoining Mount Cole State Forest, offer visitors the chance to explore the park’s granite rock faces, tall forests, creek flats, fern glades and sparkling waterfalls. Whether you’re hiking or mountain biking, day-tripping or camping in native bushland, everyone can discover something to enjoy in the scenic surrounds of Mount Buangor.

You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to spectacular views. Climb the peak of Mount Buangor (989m), the nearby Mount Sugarloaf or the high granite rock faces and a dramatic rock overhang at Cave Hill for sweeping vistas of central west Victoria. The towering gums and green ferns along the short Waterfalls Nature Walk to Cascade Falls show a glimpse of the vegetation diversity that has been able to flourish on this rugged terrain.

Go deeper and discover stately, wild eucalypt forests. Yarra Gums and Manna Gums grow along the creek flats with Blue Gums and Messmates on the south-facing escarpment and elevated plateau. Narrow-leaf Peppermint on dry ridges, Snow Gums on higher peaks and Red Stringybarks colour the western area of the park.

The park is also home to more than 130 species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Spot echidnas, Eastern Grey Kangaroos and Black-tailed and Red-necked Wallabies during the day, and keep watch for night-time visits from Common Brushtail and Common Ringtail Possums. Look up for Wedge-tailed Eagles, Crimson Rosellas and kookaburras, and listen for the deep growls of koalas echoing through the trees.

Plan a longer stay to take it all in, and book one of three campsites in the park: Bailes, Ferntree or Middle Creek Camping Areas . Campers should be self-sufficient and bring drinking water and firewood. A crackling fire in the Autumn night will be the perfect way to end the day.
