State Coal Mine

Offering an inexpensive day trip for the whole family, the State Coal Mine is an historic Gippsland attraction that fosters an understanding of Australia's cultural heritage. Entry to the site is free above ground where you can follow the heritage walk among historic buildings.

Take the family on a journey back in time at the State Coal Mine in Wonthaggi. This unique attraction in Gippsland is the only historic coal mine experience in the Southern Hemisphere.

Operating from 1909 until 1968, the State Coal Mine produced almost 17 million tonnes of coal for Victoria's industries and railways.

Drop in at the Visitor Centre and watch a film in the theatrette. Visit the souvenir shop to find unique mining memorabilia and a variety of items celebrating Wonthaggi's history.

Relax and enjoy refreshments from the cafe after exploring the grounds, or cook your own barbecue lunch at the picnic area.

The State Coal Mine offers an affordable day out for the family on the Bass Coast. Entry is free to all above-ground facilities and attractions.

How to get there

State Coal Mine

The State Coal Mine is located at 19 - 37 Garden Street, Wonthaggi, about two hours from Melbourne and 25 minutes from Phillip Island. 

As you travel into Wonthaggi from Melbourne, continue along Bass Highway until you reach the first roundabout at Graham Street and turn right. When you reach the roundabout at McDonald's, turn left and continue along Bilson Street. You will see the State Coal Mine sign when you near Garden Street. Turn right and follow to the State Coal Mine.

When you're there

The State Coal Mine is open from 10.00 am until 4.00 pm daily.

The Coal Mine Cafe is open from 9.00 am until 4.00 pm daily.

Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The State Coal Mine has meeting rooms available for hire. Call Parks Victoria on 13 1963 for booking enquiries.
