Mitchell River Silt Jetties erosion control works

Works to protect the Mitchell River Silt Jetties at Eagle Point on the Gippsland Lakes will recommence in early June.

This multi-staged project which originally commenced in 2015 is aimed at protecting the unique geomorphological feature within the Gippsland Lakes, from wave and wind erosion.

Following the success of the initial works to both the southern and northern end of the silt jetties, this ongoing series of works will be focused primarily on the shoreline of the southern silt jetty.

To allow for the safe operation of these works, visitors including vehicles will not be able to access the last two kilometres of Rivermouth Road, from the Parks Victoria amenity building to Point Dawson. This restriction will be in place until late June to allow the large machinery access to the site safely.

In addition to the Mitchell River silt jetties restoration works, Parks Victoria is undertaking a larger program of conservation works aimed at protecting and increasing the ecological values of the Gippsland Lakes.

Other projects include fox control to support threatened shorebirds, weed control to improve habitat for migratory and endemic birdlife and pest animal control to reduce the impacts on threatened vegetation communities.

This project is being funded by the Victorian State Government and is part of the Gippsland Lakes Coordinating Committee (GLCC) program being facilitated by the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority to protect and enhance natural values within the Gippsland Lakes system.
