Experience Open House Melbourne Weekend at Werribee Park
Visitors will have the rare opportunity to enter Werribee Mansion for free and experience the grandeur of the heritage-listed building and surrounding park during the Open House Melbourne Weekend 10am to 4pm on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July 2019.
Werribee Mansion has been included for its architectural significance, which holds the story of an Australian pastoral empire of the Chirnside family who lived there in the late 1800s.
Parks Victoria staff and volunteers will be on site to chat to visitors about the building, and information will be available providing insights into the Mansion’s history, art and architectural features. Werribee Park Mansion boasts over 60 rooms in several wings, and contains displays of clothing and furniture. Some spaces, normally closed to the public, will be open for the weekend.
The Open House Melbourne weekend is a family friendly event, with plenty for kids and parents to see and do on their visit to Werribee Park. Kids can play with the toys in the special children’s room (suitable for children age 3 to 10), and families can enjoy vintage games on the Great Lawn. There will be musical performances throughout the weekend and the café will be open, selling light food and beverages.
Guided tours of the formal gardens will run at select times throughout the weekend, showcasing the lake, grotto, parterre and many heritage-listed trees. These tours are pre-booked due to their limited capacity, and require a small $5 booking fee to reserve your place. Purchase your tickets from the Open House Melbourne website.
While at Werribee Park, visitors are invited to wander through the grounds to discover the many other significant buildings, structures, gardens, and trees spanning the entire park, including the recently restored glasshouse. The glasshouse dates from the 1880s and is a very rare example of a once common building type found in substantial public and private gardens. It is now used by Parks Victoria as a greenhouse to propagate plants for the park.
This year, Open House Melbourne is featuring more than 200 significant commercial and civic buildings, private homes, infrastructure and landscape projects, demonstrating some of Melbourne’s most progressive historical, contemporary and future-facing ideas in architecture and city-making.
Open House Melbourne Weekend 2019 is on July 27 and 28 in locations throughout inner and outer Melbourne. There is an additional program of events running throughout July. Full program and details here https://www.openhousemelbourne.org/melbourne/the-weekend-july-2019/
