Traditional Owners and Parks Victoria to consider future management for Brambuk

Monday 3 February, 2020

Traditional Owner corporations and Parks Victoria plan to explore future options to reinvigorate Brambuk - the National Park & Cultural Centre, in Halls Gap.

Opened in 1989 as a hub for cultural learning, interpretation and indigenous training, Brambuk currently consists of a Parks Victoria office, park information centre and Aboriginal cultural centre.

The current operator’s permit expires on 30 June 2020.  At that time, Parks Victoria will temporarily manage the centre while future business development options are explored through a Strategic Partnership Committee of Traditional Owner corporations.

Consisting of representatives from Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation and Barengi Gadjin Land Council, the committee is in the process of being formalised. As part of its scope, the committee will provide direction on the future, ongoing management of the Brambuk centre by a Traditional Owner organisation.

The Grampians landscape holds the imprint of thousands of years of Aboriginal connection. Within this landscape, the Grampians National Park contains the densest concentration of rock art paintings in Victoria. Parks Victoria is committed to supporting Traditional Owner aspirations in the region and helping to celebrate this rich history, including through a vibrant cultural centre.

Quotes attributable to Jason Borg, Regional Director–Parks Victoria:

“We’re looking forward to working with the Strategic Partnership Committee of Traditional Owner groups to explore ways to reinvigorate Brambuk into the future.”

“With the Grampians Peaks Trail and a new park management plan also on the horizon, it is an opportune time to look at how the centre can deliver long-term benefits to the local community, local businesses, Traditional Owners and the national park.”
