Barmah Island - Autumn firewood season opens

Wednesday 11 March, 2020

Domestic firewood on public land is a limited resource that needs to be carefully managed.

The firewood collection area located at Barmah Island, will open on 14 March.

Following community consultation along the Murray River access to firewood at Barmah Island is targeted to locals.  Those eligible to collect firewood are:

1. Residents from the postcode 3639 (Barmah, Lower Moira, Picola, Picola West)
2. Residents of the Moira and Campaspe shires with a current concession card (Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Veterans Affairs Gold Card)
3. Persons who are, or are eligible to be, members of the Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation.

To sustainably manage future firewood supply, Parks Victoria will assess the remaining supply of firewood at Barmah Island two weeks into the autumn season. If supply levels allow, access to firewood may be extended to other residents of the Moira and Campaspe Shires later in March.

Information and updates, including interactive maps showing designated collection areas is available at

To preserve habitat for wildlife, there will be no firewood collection at Barmah Island beyond the 2020 Autumn season.

Many animals rely on fallen timber and tree hollows for habitat. Crevices under logs and hollows in trees provide safe places for mammals, reptiles, birds and invertebrates to live and are the perfect place to protect their young from predators. Fallen timber and tree hollows also have value far beyond basic shelter, providing food resources and recycling nutrients in the ecosystem as it decays.

Quotes attributable to Charlotte Bisset District Manager, Parks Victoria.
“Most people follow the rules, however, it’s important for anyone collecting firewood on public land to be aware of the rules and regulations to avoid significant penalties”.

“If you suspect anyone of illegal firewood activities please contact Parks Victoria on 13 1963.”

“We want to remind the public that firewood can only be taken from designated collection areas in parks during approved times and for personal use only and cannot be sold.
