Storms close section of Great Ocean Walk

Thursday 11 November, 2021

Due to recent storms and heavy rain, Parks Victoria has had to close a section of the popular Great Ocean Walk, west from Johanna Beach Campground through to Ryans Den.

A section of rock cliff face has subsided to the east of Ryans Den, with large boulders blocking the track. With recent rainfall and severe weather, further landslides and rock falls are a possibility.

Public safety is Parks Victoria’s top priority, and the 14.2km section of trail will remain closed until work can be done to make the area safe again.

“Independent and expert geotechnical advice has told us that rockfalls could happen at any time,” Michael Smith, District Manager at Parks Victoria, says. “It is not safe for walkers to use this section of trail and it will be closed at least until 19 December pending further advice.”

All campgrounds along the Great Ocean Walk are open, but walkers cannot continue along the trail from Johanna Beach Campground to Ryans Den.

Alternative arrangements during this closure

  • Pick up from Johanna Beach Campground and drop off at Ryans Den access track on Great Ocean Road to complete the Great Ocean Walk
  • Ryans Den access track is drop-off only due to limited parking capacity on Great Ocean Road (maximum space for 3 vehicles only)
  • Ryans Den access track is gated (Management Vehicles Only) and no access for public vehicles
  • From the car drop-off area it is approx 1500m walk back onto the Great Ocean Walk to continue west into Ryans Den campsite and continue the remainder of the trail.

A Licensed Tour Operator along the Great Ocean Road may be able to assist walkers with transport from Johanna Beach Campground to Ryans Den access track in order to continue the Great Ocean Walk.

All campgrounds along the Great Ocean Walk remain open, including Johanna Beach Campground and Ryans Den. Visitor safety is our top priority and we are working to re-open this section of the walk as soon as it is safe.
