Triplet Falls walk re-opens after storms

Monday 4 April, 2022

Hikers and visitors can again enjoy the scenic Triplet Falls loop walk at Great Otway National Park following the completion of storm recovery works.

Dozens of fallen trees and debris from the surrounding rainforest had extensively damaged sections of the walk’s steel boardwalk and safety handrailing, with the area subsequently closed to ensure public safety.

The recovery task was a complex, labour-intensive process that first required the walk to be cleared of debris, branches and fallen timber. Damaged and bent sections of the boardwalk then had to be removed for repair and carefully reinstalled, while handrailing was replaced, welded or reshaped.

Fortunately, rangers were able to maintain public access to the elevated waterfall viewing platforms while the loop walk was closed for repair.

“We are very pleased to reopen the loop walk and thank visitors and the local community for their patience while these necessary safety works took place,” said Andrew McKinnon, Area Chief Ranger.

“We were conscious of wanting to get the loop walk re-opened as soon as it was safe to do so and we worked hard to find the best possible solution. It was a real team effort by Parks Victoria, ably supported by team members from DELWP and our contractors.”

Parks Victoria encourages people to visit the Great Otway National Park and once again wander the Triplet Falls circuit walk, as it makes its way through scenic rainforest to the elevated viewing platforms, providing spectacular views of the three cascades and one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the park. Access to Little Aire Falls is also open.

The impact of last year’s storm events in Victoria was widespread, and the Victorian Government has contributed $6.6 million to support the recovery and re-opening of parks and reserves. Of the 52 parks and reserves hit by storms last June, only two remain entirely closed. Most parks have been re-opened though some areas still require repair work to make safe the strategic fire network, walking tracks, roads and visitor sites.
